Understanding Non-Medical Emergency Travel Insurance: Evacuations, Coverage, and Benefits

Learn how non-medical emergency travel insurance protects you during political unrest, natural disasters, and unforeseen emergencies.

Non Medical Emergency Evacuation

Let’s say you’re in a foreign destination for a week-long vacation. After a few days, you find yourself in the middle of a political uprising with protests, roadblocks, and rising tensions in the area. The US embassy issued an advisory to leave the country as soon as possible as things got out of hand. You’re not hurt and not in danger, but it’s clear staying could put you at risk.

In this situation, your non-medical emergency travel insurance benefit kicks in. Your travel insurance company arranges for a flight to get you out of the city to your next stop in itinerary or back to the US if needed.

What is Non-Medical Emergency Transportation Coverage?

Non-medical emergency travel evacuation insurance is a type of travel insurance benefit that offers assistance when you need to evacuate from a destination due to a non-medical emergency situation. This type of coverage may be helpful in situations such as natural disasters and civil unrest.

What warrants a Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation?

Non-medical emergency evacuations may be warranted in situations where it is necessary to leave a destination earlier than planned due to situations that could pose a significant risk to your safety or well-being. These may include:

  • Natural disasters: When there is a high risk of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake, or wildfire in your travel destination, it may be necessary to evacuate to a safer location
  • Political unrest: If there is a sudden outbreak of civil unrest, protests, or other similar events in your destination, it may be necessary to leave the area to avoid any risks to your safety

Note: This benefit provides coverage for your transportation only if the actual evacuation process has been initiated within seven (7) days from the initial Natural Disaster or Political Situation evacuation notice advised or posted, whichever is earlier, by the recognized government of either the United States or the Host Country.

Is Non-Medical Emergency Travel Insurance necessary?

While it may not be mandatory, non-medical emergency travel evacuation insurance is worth considering because it can offer assistance against unforeseen, non-medical events, such as political unrest or natural disasters. So, if your travel destination has a probability of similar situations or events happening, this coverage can be necessary to leave your travel destination for safety.

Whether it’s a hurricane or civil instability, having this travel insurance coverage allows you to travel flexibly, knowing you can quickly and safely return home or move to a safer location if the situation deteriorates.

What Does AXA’s Non-Medical Emergency Travel Insurance Cover?

Here is what you can expect with travel evacuation insurance coverage in non-medical conditions:

  • Evacuation to a Safer Location: If your destination becomes unsafe, AXA can make arrangements for moving you to a safer location. This could be in the same country or a nearby country, depending on the situation.
  • Transportation Home: In extreme cases where it’s no longer safe to stay in the region, AXA can offer coverage for costs involved with your trip back home in the US. This may include flights and ground transport.
  • Temporary Accommodations: If you’re evacuated to a new location and must stay there temporarily, your non-medical emergency insurance will cover the cost of accommodations until further arrangements are made or the situation improves.
  • Travel Arrangements: This travel insurance coverage also offers 24/7 assistance with the logistics of evacuation. This includes transportation, communicating with local authorities, and making sure you’re safe throughout the process.
  • Repatriation of Remains: In the unfortunate event of a traveler’s death, this coverage helps with transporting the remains to the United States. This may include transportation and handling of the legal and logistical requirements of repatriation.

How Does Repatriation of Remains Work?

To initiate repatriation, it must be authorized in advance and arranged through AXA. This ensures that the complex logistics of transporting a body internationally are handled correctly and respectfully.

Covered repatriation expenses include necessary services such as:

  • Embalming or cremation.
  • A minimal casket container.
  • The transportation of the body to the U.S.

Transportation of Minor Children

AXA may also arrange to return your unattended child(ren) (under 18 years old) who was traveling with you. They will be brought back to a friend or family member you or your next of kin has chosen, with an attendant if needed.

What Does Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation Insurance Not Cover?

Non-medical evacuation insurance does not cover medical evacuations, which will require separate coverage. It also excludes situations where no official evacuation order is issued by local or U.S. authorities.

If you choose to leave a destination because you’re uncomfortable, it’s a minor inconvenience, or for personal reasons without an official warning, travel insurance won’t cover your evacuation costs.

Some policies won’t cover evacuations from areas where travel restrictions already exist. If you travel to an area that has long-standing advisories against visiting, coverage won’t apply. Also, if an official evacuation order is issued, your travel insurance will only apply if you act within the time frame specified, usually within a few days of the advisory.

FAQs for Non-Medical Travel Insurance

Q. What’s the difference between non-medical emergency evacuation and medical evacuation?

Non-medical emergency evacuation is when you are moved to a safer location due to situations like political unrest or natural disasters, and you’re not physically injured. Medical evacuation is when you need to be taken to the nearest medical facility because of a serious illness or injury. Both types of evacuations are about keeping you safe, but for different reasons.

Q. What situations are covered under political evacuation insurance?

Political evacuation insurance covers emergencies like political unrest, civil disorder, or government instability that require evacuation for safety.

Q. How do I know if my destination is high risk for non-medical emergencies?

To know if your destination is at high risk for non-medical emergencies, you can check government travel advisories from the U.S. State Department or local embassy websites. These advisories will give you up-to-date information on political unrest or natural disasters. AXA can also help you identify high-risk areas based on our coverage guidelines.

Q. What if I’m told to evacuate but can’t leave right away?

If you’re told to evacuate but can’t leave immediately the first thing you should do is contact AXA for guidance. They can help you arrange transportation and recommend safe places to stay until you can leave.

Q. Can I choose where I’m taken or does AXA decide?

In most cases, AXA will work with local authorities to assess the situation and decide the safest location for your evacuation. You may not have total control over the destination, but AXA’s priority is to get you to a safe place as soon as possible.
