  • From January 8, 2025, US citizens won’t be able to travel without UK ETA.

  • You can get approval for short trips, such as tourism, transit, or business travel, with UK ETA without requiring any visa.

  • UK Electronic travel authorization allows multiple entries and is valid for two years or until your passport expires.

US citizens have had access to the UK for short-term visits, including travel, business visits, and transit. However, from 2025 onwards, those who are traveling from the US will need to get an Electronic Travel Authorization before entering the UK. This is a further step towards the strengthening of security and border control by the UK visa and immigration authorities.

The ETA will provide easy entry to eligible travelers while allowing people to be screened online before they land. In this guide, you will have the updated details on the ETA requirement for US citizens.

What Does ETA mean for travelers to the UK?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization is a travel permission to enter the United Kingdom for a short period of time or transit without applying for a visa. It is valid for non-UK nationals from visa-exempt countries.

UK ETA came into existence in October 2023 and has been successfully pre-screening travelers before they enter the country. You can apply by using their official application. Travelers need to enter all the requested details to proceed with the UK ETA process. The information that will be shared with the application is going to be verified by the authorities against their security databases. If the information is correct, an automatically approved ETA is issued. If anything suspicious is found, then your application will be reviewed by an officer.

As per the UK visa and immigration agency, if you are planning to stay for up to six months for the purpose of visiting your family, friends, business associates, short-term studies, or transitioning through the UK, you must apply for UK ETA. You can also apply for a Creative Worker Visa Concession or for permitted paid engagement for up to 3 months.

Do US Citizens Need an ETA for the UK

As of January 8, 2025, the US nationals will need to have a UK ETA in order to enter the United Kingdom. The application process for the ETA opened on November 27, 2024. This will allow US citizens ample time to apply ahead of their travel plans.

The ETA will allow you to make multiple entries over a two-year period or until the passport expires. This requirement may vary based on exceptions. UK ETA is not required by individuals holding a valid UK visa and others with certain immigration status.

Other than the citizens of the United States, the UK ETA requirements will affect other visa-exempt countries as well, such as Canada, Australia, Argentina, and many other non-European countries.

From April 2, 2025, European citizens, except British and Irish, must also secure an ETA to enter the UK.  Applications for the ETA will open from March 5, 2025.

Important Tips If You Are Applying To UK ETA

When you apply for ETA to enter the UK, you must follow some tips for a smooth process.

  • You need to submit your application early from your date of travel because processing time can cause delays in your travel plans.

  • Make sure that your passports need to be valid for at least six months from your planned date of stay in the UK.

  • Fill out the application form very carefully and make sure that all details match your passport. If your information does not match, you might face delays or rejection.

  • Keep the necessary documents with you when applying, such as a passport and cards for payments.

  • Consider buying a travel insurance plan that covers unexpected situations like medical expenses, trip delays, cancellations, baggage loss, and more.
