Across the Ages: How Generational Values Shape Travel Choices

Travel is more than a getaway — it’s a reflection of our values, priorities, and the way we see the world. These priorities often shift with age, creating stark differences in how each generation approaches their journeys. A new study by AXA and Talker Research offers a fascinating glimpse into the generational divides shaping modern travel, from what people are willing to sacrifice to how they view risk and protection. 

The study surveyed a representative sample of 2,000 Americans who have traveled domestically or internationally within the past 12 months. The findings show that while travel is universal, the way we plan, budget, and experience it is deeply personal — and often influenced by the generational lens through which we see the world. 

Sacrifices in the Name of Travel 

Ballooning costs have forced travelers across all age groups to make tough decisions. But what they’re willing to give up varies significantly by generation. For instance, younger travelers — particularly Gen Z (49%) and millennials (47%) — are most likely to forgo premium seating on flights to save money. Older generations, however, prioritize cutting costs elsewhere: 49% of Gen X, 66% of baby boomers, and 64% of the Silent Generation would rather skip premium car rentals. 

These differences highlight generational values. Younger travelers often prioritize the destination and experiences over comfort during the journey, while older generations seek ease and convenience, particularly during longer trips. This divide underscores how age shapes the travel experience, from what we value to what we’re willing to compromise on. 

Attitudes Toward Travel Insurance 

Another clear generational divide emerges when it comes to travel insurance. Gen X stands out as the most likely to buy it, with 97% of those who’ve purchased travel insurance saying they would do so again. This generation’s pragmatism reflects their life stage — balancing family needs, financial security, and a strong desire to protect their investment in travel. 

In contrast, younger generations, such as Gen Z, are less likely to see travel insurance as essential. Many cite reasons like thinking it won’t be used (40%) or believing it’s too expensive (36%). However, the study shows that this perspective often shifts after personal experience. When unexpected events occur — such as delayed flights, lost luggage, or canceled reservations — 64% of respondents of all ages say they’re more likely to purchase insurance for future trips. 

Baby boomers, despite often traveling more frequently in retirement, express less concern about potential travel mishaps. Only 22% of boomers worry about unexpected events compared to 74% of Gen Z. This confidence could stem from a mix of experience, financial stability, or simply a more relaxed attitude toward potential disruptions. 

Generational Preferences: What Really Matters 

When choosing travel insurance, the benefits that matter most also vary by age. Cancellation coverage is king for baby boomers (30%), Gen X (23%), and millennials (20%), reflecting their desire to protect their plans against life’s uncertainties. In contrast, Gen Z places equal importance on flight protection and emergency medical coverage, likely due to their concerns about logistics and safety while traveling. 

The Silent Generation, meanwhile, values emergency medical coverage above all else (35%). For these older travelers, the peace of mind that comes with knowing they’re protected in case of a medical emergency far outweighs concerns about other aspects of the journey. 

Coping With Travel Disruptions 

Generational differences also emerge in how people cope with the inevitable bumps along the way. Among those who have had travel plans go awry, younger travelers like Gen Z are most likely to feel anxious (54%). Older generations, on the other hand, are more likely to feel frustration (63%) than anxiety. Baby boomers, in particular, often take these disruptions in stride. 

What We’re Willing to Pay For 

When it comes to staying within budget, travelers across generations are making sacrifices, but their priorities differ. A significant portion of respondents said they would skip paying extra for premium car rentals (54%), premium seating (52%), in-flight entertainment (47%), and extra luggage (47%). Interestingly, 37% also indicated they would forgo travel insurance.  
 
Generational trends reveal a clear divide: older travelers are more likely to opt out of premium car rentals, with 49% of Gen X, 66% of baby boomers, and 64% of the Silent Generation preferring to save in this area.  

Lessons Across Generations 

Despite their differences, there’s something each generation can learn from the others. Younger travelers can benefit from the perspective of older generations, who often prioritize planning and protection through tools like travel insurance. Conversely, older generations might find inspiration in the adventurous spirit and resourcefulness of Gen Z and millennials, who are willing to embrace budget-friendly solutions to fuel their wanderlust. 

The AXA and Talker Research study reveals that while age may shape how we travel, the core desire to explore and connect with the world is universal. By understanding and appreciating these generational differences, we can find new ways to make travel more meaningful and accessible for everyone.
