  • Travel insurance can cover damages to rental cars through Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), including environmental and theft-related incidents.

  • Personal accident coverage in your travel insurance may include medical expenses for injuries sustained in rental car accidents.

  • While CDW offers extensive protection, it typically excludes high-risk activities, unauthorized drivers, and accidents involving impaired driving.

Renting a car while traveling gives you the freedom to explore new destinations, but it also comes with risks you might not think about until it's too late… like an unexpected accident or damage to the rental. In such scenarios, knowing how travel insurance intersects with car rentals is key to avoiding gaps in coverage. Let’s break down the ins and outs of car rental coverage under travel insurance so that you can navigate what’s protected and what isn’t and how to ensure your road trip goes as planned.

What Travel Insurance Covers in Relation to Car Rentals

Knowing what travel insurance covers for car rentals is key to being efficiently protected on your trip. Many parts of your trip, including cancellations, medical emergencies, and personal belongings, can impact your rental experience.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

One of the key parts of car rental insurance in your travel insurance policy is the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). CDW will cover the cost of repairs or replacement of the rental car in the event of an accident, subject to policy limits. This includes minor damages like scratches or dents and major damages like collision repairs. It may also cover damages from fire, vandalism or other incidents. CDW also applies to damages caused by environmental factors like extreme weather, floods or falling objects.

Theft Protection

Car theft is a big concern especially when you’re in unfamiliar territories. Travel insurance policies with theft protection under CDW will cover you if your rental car is stolen. This can be full replacement value of the car or repair costs if the car is damaged during theft. Theft protection may also cover situations where parts of the car are stolen like wheels, mirrors or other valuable components.

Personal Accident Coverage

In the event of an accident involving your rental car, personal accident or emergency medical coverage in your travel insurance policy will cover medical expenses for injuries sustained by you or your passengers. This can be emergency medical care, hospital stays, surgeries and even rehabilitation expenses. Some policies also cover disability or accidental death due to car accident. This is more critical when traveling abroad where healthcare costs are high or your existing health insurance may not cover you well.

Vandalism and Damage from External Causes

Damage from vandalism or external factors like extreme weather or natural disasters can be stressful and expensive to repair. Many travel insurance policies with car rental coverage include vandalism protection so you’re not liable for damages intentionally caused by others. This can be keying the car, breaking windows or other forms of malicious damage. External factors like hailstorms, floods, earthquakes or falling trees can also damage your rental car. Having coverage for these incidents will protect you from the forces of nature.

Personal Belongings Protection

While renting a car, your personal belongings may be exposed to theft or damage especially if left inside the car. Many travel insurance policies may cover personal belongings stored in the rental car, like luggage, electronics, and other valuables. If your items are stolen or damaged while in the car, the travel insurance may reimburse you for their value, subject to policy limits. This is useful when you’re on the move and need to leave items in the car temporarily.

Trip Interruption Due to Rental Car Accidents

If your trip is interrupted because of an accident involving your rental car, like if the car is badly damaged or you or your passengers are injured, you may have to cut your trip short. Trip interruption coverage helps in such cases by reimbursing you for the non-refundable, unused portion of your prepaid trip expenses like hotel stays, flights and excursions. This coverage may also cover the cost of transportation back to your home or to a destination where you can continue your trip depending on the situation.

What CDW and Travel Insurance Don’t Cover

There are certain situations and activities that are not covered by CDW and travel insurance. Know these so you won’t be surprised during your trip.

1. Damage Due to Reckless or Negligent Driving
CDW and travel insurance won’t cover damages due to reckless or negligent driving. This includes driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding or deliberately ignoring traffic rules. If an accident happens under these conditions, you’ll be fully liable for the repairs or costs.

Also, reckless behavior, such as off-road driving or using the vehicle in a way that violates the rental agreement, such as participating in street races, will void any coverage under CDW and travel insurance. Make sure you follow local traffic rules and drive responsibly to maintain your coverage.

2. Unauthorized Drivers

Travel insurance and CDW only covers authorized drivers listed in the rental agreement. If someone not listed as an authorized driver drives the vehicle and causes an accident, any damage or liability may not be covered. This applies even if the driver is a friend or family member. To be protected, make sure all potential drivers are added to the rental agreement before using the vehicle.

3. Personal Liability for Injury or Damage to Others

CDW covers damage to the rental car but not third-party liability for injuries or damages you cause to others or their property. You need separate liability insurance for this kind of coverage either through your travel insurance or another policy. Without liability coverage, you’ll be liable to compensate injured parties or pay for damage to other vehicles, property or public infrastructure.

4. Mechanical Failures or Maintenance Issues

Issues such as engine failure, brake malfunction or other mechanical problems due to the car’s condition are generally not covered by CDW or travel insurance. Rental companies are expected to provide well-maintained vehicles but if you experience issues due to poor maintenance, the responsibility falls on the rental company. However, if the mechanical issue is due to driver error such as misusing the car, you’ll be liable for the repairs.

5. Tires, Windscreens and Undercarriage Damage

In many CDW policies, certain parts of the car such as tires, windscreens, mirrors and undercarriage are excluded from coverage. For example if you hit a curb and damage the undercarriage or get a flat tire, these repairs may not be covered unless your policy includes additional coverage for these parts.

6. Use of the Vehicle for Unauthorized Purposes

If the rental car is used for any unauthorized purposes such as commercial activities, ridesharing or towing, CDW and travel insurance won’t cover any resulting damages. Using rental cars for activities outside of personal travel is against the rental agreement terms and therefore voids the coverage.
